When I started my blog barely anyone was making
money from this style of publishing.
I wasn't planning on making money from it directly
either, it was a marketing experiment at first,
then became a hobby when the experiment failed.
My hobby turned into an income stream and then
became my business, which changed my life in so
many good ways, including...
- The first milestone: it delivered enough money
that I could quit my part time job.
- Next I used the cash flow to save a deposit for
my first house.
- It paid for a new car, the first time I ever
bought a car fresh off the car lot.
- Then it paid for my first mortgage (I owned my
own home before I turned 30).
- It paid for a trip traveling around the world
for 8 months, visiting 25 different cities (I came
back with more money then I left with, again
thanks to my blog)
- And more recently, it's given me the freedom to
spend every day with my mother in hospital while
she recovers from a stroke (I'm writing this right
now sitting next to my mum).
It's amazing to think you can sit at your computer
and simply type words on the screen, which you
publish online using a basic publishing tool
called a blog, and shortly after thousands of
people can read your work.
These people become your fans, spread the word for
you, interact with you, and a few of them even buy
things when you make recommendations.
THIS IS NOT QUICK CASH
Of course I'm making it sound all too easy, when
all of this actually happened to me over a period
of months and years, and was certainly not easy.
I've worked hard to build something people come
back to day after day and I've learned so much.
Some of the most important lessons I discovered
along the way include:
- I developed a concept known as "Pillar
Articles", a content format that every long term
successful blog must include.
- I learned how important it is that I don't spend
my time playing around with technology, especially
if I want to make money, so I found ways to have
other people do this for me.
- I became an expert at driving traffic,
especially through advanced techniques almost no
other bloggers at the time were doing, like
publishing free reports and creating podcast
interviews.
- I saw so many bloggers working too hard - 12
hour days sometimes - so I developed a system that
only requires a few hours a day to succeed,
relying on a principle known as the 80/20 Rule.
- It became clear that too many bloggers are
terrible marketers, so I studied how to do things
like sell products, increase conversion and gain
leverage on my time, so I could earn a lot from a
little.
- Although I was slow to start, eventually I
realized how important it is to learn not just how
to blog, but also how to have an email newsletter
and use these two tools in tandem for huge profits
(adding an email list tripled my income).
- I was able to then apply these skills and make
big gains fast, by buying other blogs and
websites, and then selling them for as much as
1,000% profit.
All these lessons, experiences, techniques,
strategies and systems are the reason why I was
able to change my life in so many positive ways.
Going from making a few hundred dollars a week
working a casual job, to earning more than $1,000
a day thanks to my blog was a HUGE change, and I
know that kind of income would change your life
too.
