Bookstores fading into the sunset
Everywhere you turn, bookstores are dropping like
flies. Borders has shuttered hundreds of stores and
Barnes & Noble is looking at the same fate.
They certainly can't complete with Amazon and
the wide variety of books now available in electronic
format. But in many ways, it will be a shame to lose
brick and mortar bookstores and the environment
they offer.
Just the other day, my wife and I went out for dinner
and a movie. When we finished dinner sooner than
expected, we had an extra half hour to kill. So we
popped into Barnes & Noble.
As I rummaged through the photography section,
I found a couple of great books that had not turned
up in any of my searches on Amazon. Now, this is
primarily because the search terms I normally use
wouldn't include these books - but each book had
a chapter or two that weren't on the main topic
of the book but covered major interests of mine.
Had I not been in the bookstore, there's no way
I would have known about these books.
There's also a warm, fuzzy feeling about hanging
out in a bookstore, particularly on a cold or rainy
day, that you just can't match when you're making
your purchase online. Hanging out and browsing
through travel guides of countries you'll probably
never visit is a small pleasure you can't equal
online.
Not to mention that local independent bookstores
(few of which can be found these days) and the
big chains played a significant role in my son's
education. Seeing a child wander through the
children's section of a bookstore making discovery
after discovery is a joyful experience. And it
was instrumental in helping to create my son's
lifelong love of books and learning. Again, this
is something I doubt can be matched by anything
that's offered online.
So what does the future hold for bookstores?
Not much good news, I'm afraid.
Now, that isn't to say that I don't love purchasing
books online too. When I know exactly what I
want, nothing beats the prices and delivery of
using Amazon Prime.
But it would be a shame to lose all the value and
all the joy that brick and mortar bookstores have
to offer.

A book I highly recommend
==================================
While I'm on this topic, let me share a book with
you that I'm currently reading and I think you'll
get a lot out of. No affiliate link or anything, just
go to your local bookstore or Amazon and grab
a copy.
It's called "Double Double - How to Double Your
Revenue and Profit in 3 Years or Less" by Cameron
Herold. If you've read my interview with Cameron
in "10-Minute Business Success", then you know
how highly I think of him. Of course, I'm not alone
as anyone who was instrumental in taking
1-800-GotJunk? from $2 million to over $105
million in revenue is bound to have loads of raving
fans.
Cameron shows you what it really takes to move
your business from a pipe dream to reality in a very
practical yet highly innovative way. He also shows
you how to maintain a healthy balance between
your business and personal life every step of the
way.
Anyone who is serious about taking their business
to the next level will benefit immensely from
Cameron's insights. Go grab a copy - you can
thank me later :-).
Yours for more traffic... more sales... more often,
