How one technique increased my traffic 25%

This is a story from the very
early days of my blog, when I
joined a "blog network".

I think you will find this
relevant if your blog is new...

Hello There,

Let's get a definition out of the way before I go
on to discuss the traffic virtues of being a
member of a blog network.

For me, and for the purposes of this article, I'm
going to define a blog network as any group of
blogs that share links under the banner of a
"network".

The blogs in the network may overtly link to other
blogs, for example writing a post directly
discussing a post made at another blog in the
network, or more covertly by including links in a
blogroll, footer or header area.

The idea is that blogs in the network trade links
with other blogs specifically because of their
affiliation. There may be a central blog network
homepage that links all the blogs together or a
banner or icon that signifies the link.

It doesn't matter the form, it's the function (the
purpose) - to get traffic moving between blogs and
improve search engine rankings because of
increased backlinks - that matters.

ALL BLOG NETWORKS ARE NOT THE SAME

Across the web you will find all kinds of
different blog network formats. Some will be loose
affiliations under a banner or title. Others have
revenue sharing arrangements where the blogger
splits advertising profits with the blog network
owners, or where the blogger doesn't own his or
her blog and is considered an employee who is paid
a regular salary in return for blogging.

If you are looking for examples of blog networks
there are three major players you may be aware of
that demonstrate the three different formats I
just mentioned.

1. 9rules.com - no profit sharing and a loose
affiliation under a banner and a "network ethos"
that all member blogs must adhere to.

2. B5media.com - A revenue sharing blog network.

3. WeblogsInc.com - Bloggers are paid to write.

There are many more blog networks out there and if
you can't find one suitable for you then starting
your own network is a possibility as well.

The main idea is to increase you exposure, expand
your audience and help your blog(s) improve search
engine rankings. It's a good idea to contribute
something valuable to the "community" within the
blog network so you are giving something back and
not just leeching traffic.

I'm not going to recommend a specific network to
you because which you join, if any, depends
entirely on why you blog. What I can share with
you is how joining a blog networked impacted my
blog.

A TRAFFIC EXPLOSION

In mid 2005, after I had been blogging solidly for
a few months, writing quite a few pillar articles
and starting to earn some exposure for my blog I
was emailed by Paul Scriven (aka scrivs, the owner
of 9rules) and asked whether I wanted to join
9rules.com.

I had heard of 9rules before, but only briefly
looked at the site. I confirmed with Paul that by
joining 9rules I didn't lose any control over my
content or my revenues and agreed to join. I got
access to the member forums, looked around,
introduced myself, stuck the 9rules banner and
link on my blog, made an announcement about my
membership to my readers and then went back to
blogging.

A week or so later my "new member" announcement
went live on the 9rules blog and my traffic
doubled overnight.

I thought it was a traffic spike. I was wrong.

A few weeks later, although my traffic had dropped
somewhat I had effectively gained a permanent
increase in my blog readership, including my RSS
subscribers, of about 25%. I could only attribute
it to joining 9rules.

And that was only the start...

ITS ALL ABOUT THE NETWORK EFFECTS

Months later I wrote a pillar article on my blog
introducing the concept of Google's PageRank and
explaining how much attention we, as website
owners, should pay to it. (You can read it here -

This one article did more to bring in traffic to
my blog than any article I had written previously.
It wasn't any better than my previous articles. It
wasn't necessarily covering a "hotter" topic.
There was one reason why it did so well -

One very prominent design blog linked to it.

The owner of this blog just happened to be a
9rules member. His blog was very popular and had a
significant audience. When he linked to my article
it caused a viral effect, with many other smaller
blogs linking to my article and so on and so on.

That one article brought in nearly 100 backlinks
and tons of new traffic to my blog. The only
reason I received the attention was because I
joined a blog network exposing my blog to all the
other bloggers in the network.

BLOGGING AWARENESS

The power of a blog network is not just the direct
traffic you get when you first become a member.
It's also about the awareness you create in the
blogosphere.

Other blogs are one of the most effective traffic
building resources available to you and by joining
a blog network you suddenly become a member of
special bloggers club that share a passion and are
eager to help each other grow their blogs.

Blog traffic building is about creating
communication channels. Directly you control your
own blog and your voice. You then want your voice
- your words - to be heard (and listened to) in as
many places as possible.

A blog network opens up hundreds of new
communication channels for your blogging voice to
travel on. You can't control these channels
because they are the voices of all the other
bloggers in the network. But hopefully every now
and then you will say something interesting enough
that other bloggers will pass it on. This can only
happen when someone is listening to you in the
first place.

micro-blogging combined with instant messaging.

You're not going to "get" it until you try it,
so I'll stop trying to describe how it works and
you just go use it.

- sell your products and services
- sell other people's products and services
- keep up to date with friends and family
- participate in the conversation
- become famous
- and more...

Although hesitant initially, after Twittering for
fun, I started to realize how incredible Twitter
is for business too.

Simply put, you can't afford not to use this tool
if you want to stay current and be a participant
in your market and not just a consumer or
observer.

Participation leads to insights, which leads to
you developing a more intimate knowledge of your
industry, and more importantly, a more direct
influence over the important people in your
industry, namely -

- Other experts/mavens
- Your audience

To put this into practical perspective, I use
Twitter to send traffic to my blog posts. I use
Twitter to promote affiliate products (I've done
thousands in sales already). I use Twitter to stay
connected with other top Internet marketers and to
connect with my people - my followers.

It's a great tool, but like all things requires
work to get going, so you should start now.

How to 'trade circles' around other Forex traders...

Hello There,

Is your goal to become a full time blogger?

Do you like the sound of blogging for a living?

Yeah, me too. At least I did anyway. But then I
learned the truth. I don't like doing anything
"full time".

Even something as fun as blogging is not an
activity I would want to do for the majority of my
day. I like variety in my life and while I want
blogging to be a part of it, I don't want it to be
the main labor. I want to do it because I like it,
not because I need to do it to make a living.

I remember when I first decided to become a
serious blogger. I monitored some of the other
professional bloggers, the guys and girls making a
living from blogging. Darren Rowse
[www.problogger.net] was of particular influence
on me because he was doing very well, had started
off as a complete Internet beginner and was from
Australia like me.

I tried to emulate Darren's blogging style. I knew
I had the skills to do it and in fact more
experience than Darren in a lot of ways because I
had been working online for over seven years while
he started much later. I had plenty of material to
blog about so I knuckled down and committed myself
to posting multiple articles every day.

It didn't last long.

Maybe I was lazy, maybe I was blindly following
someone else's lead without really thinking it
through. Whatever the reason I wasn't cut out for
writing blog posts each and every day. My blogging
strategy had to change...again.

Darren and many other bloggers are machine-like in
how efficient and how frequently they can pump out
good content for their blogs. These people work
hard. They enjoy solid rewards for their labor,
but my motto is not to work hard, but to work
smart, so I needed another way to make blogging
work for me.

REALIGN YOUR GOALS

I'm going to assume you are like me. You blog, you
want to blog, you enjoy blogging and you want to
increase your blog traffic. Most importantly you
want to do it quickly and efficiently and not
waste time putting energy into activities that
don't produce fantastic results.

The first thing you have to do, and this is what I
did when I decided full time blogging wasn't for
me, is to decide what your blog is for - what you
want to get out of it and consequently what your
audience should get out of it as a result?

I decided that I would use my blog for two main
activities -

1. To dump all my knowledge built up from years of
working online into article and audio format. I
wanted a repository of my skills and experience.

2. To increase my exposure and enhance my
credibility - to improve the "Yaro" brand.

With these two goals in mind I went to work
producing some big meaty solid how-to articles,
stuff you would read in books and manuals on
Internet marketing.

I didn't bother blogging too much about news or
linking to other blogs in my industry at this
point because those activities were not aligned
with my goals. I wanted my best stuff out there so
other people could learn from me and I could
demonstrate that I was an expert in my field.

In your case your goals should dictate what you
want to achieve with your blog.

If your blog is designed to help you get freelance
writing gigs, then publish lots of original
creative articles.

If you are interested in selling your consulting
services then go to work putting out articles and
case studies on the work you have done.

If you want your blog to become the news source
for everything related to Michael Jackson
celebrity gossip then aim to post multiple
news-bite sized articles per day.

The point is to define your objectives and work to
your goals. Don't follow someone else's goals just
because they appear to be doing well.

THE LAZY BUT SMART BLOGGER

I want to be clear about one point - you *don't*
have to work hard to be a successful blogger.

You don't have to post an article each and every
day. You don't have to create something of
'genius level' creativity each time you blog.

Ahh, see, now you can relax.

Of course if you don't write articles you won't
get traffic but as long as you post something
interesting, creative, practical or valuable every
once and a while your blog readership will
increase. People that like your work will look
forward to it regardless of how frequently you
post. A little anticipation is a good thing.

When you start to post regularly, not hourly or
daily but at least weekly, people adjust their
expectations accordingly. Remember you don't owe
anyone anything when you blog. Blogging is only
about putting in as much effort as is required to
meet YOUR goals.

If you post new articles six times a day people
will start to expect it from you. You will start
to expect it from yourself and blogging will feel
like a job because of pressures to publish a
certain amount of new content each day.

Now if that's your goal, that's fine, just
remember you can change things if you find
yourself suffering because you set unrealistic
goals. Don't ever feel obligated to do anything.

In my case I started to post between one and two
big articles per week and about one or two
podcasts per month. I'd also do a little news
linking or track-backing of other articles I had a
strong interest in during the "heat of the
moment". I could brain-dump my thoughts quickly
and effortlessly into a blog post whenever the
inspiration hit me.

I did most of my early foundation blogging while
at work. I worked at a computer help desk with
Internet access so I could blog in between helping
people at my job.

I ended up blogging collectively for maybe 2 hours
per day on average and I still managed to grow my
blog traffic to 1000+ daily readers within a year
and then 5,000 by the end of the second year, and
I didn't have to post each and every day to do
it. There is a smarter and easier way to get blog
traffic.

industry, who presents articles to help people
make money online and runs a membership site to
teach people to blog for profit, it's pretty
clear I make a living by helping others make a
living online too.

That, for obvious reasons, tends to bother some
people, and I'm questioned whether you can indeed
make money from the Internet if you don't sell
people products on how to make money. It does seem
rather incestuous in some way doesn't it?

Well some of you will be surprised to know that
yes, you can build an Internet business that is
not focused on Internet marketing or anything
related to making money and be very successful.

In fact I expect significantly more people make a
living online selling stuff in niches that have
nothing to do with money, marketing, or business.

And here's some interesting proof of just that -

A BOARD GAME ABOUT HERBS?

If you ever had doubts about the potential to
succeed online by finding a niche and creating a
business around it, then Jeff Walker has a video
you have to watch.

Jeff is the guy behind Product Launch Formula, a
course I purchased over two years ago that is no
longer available. Jeff's tactics are great and in
my opinion, mandatory study for any person who
intends to sell something online.

Jeff's about to release a new version of his
program, titled Product Launch Formula 2.0, and in
anticipation of the release, he's put out this
awesome video from one his clients who used the
launch formula in a very obscure niche - herbs -
and one of the products he sells is a board game.

I don't know about you, but a board game based on
herbs is not something I would ever expect could
be the basis of a six figure business.

LESSONS FROM THE VIDEO

There's some great content in the video and I
recommend you take 45 minutes from you day today
to watch it from start to finish.

Here's just some of the notes I took -

    * Conducting teleseminars with experts as part
of your launch process is a VERY powerful
technique, especially in non-Internet marketing
niches. Experts you interview will help build your
list because they want to promote their interview
and thus will send traffic to it, this in turn
helps you sell more product.

    * Using a limited bonus package for the first
X buyers creates scarcity, which ramps up sales
big time.

    * Having a list of buyers is 10 or 20 times
more valuable than having a list of prospects.
This is the core reason people can run very
successful businesses with tiny email lists -
because they have a list with people who actually
are interested enough in what you offer to spend
money, they are not just freebie seekers.

    * Create a sense of community before the
release of your product. One of the suggested
methods for doing this is through blog comments
and there's some awesome examples of how John
(the herb guy) did this in the video.

The core strategy presented in the video is what
Jeff calls the Horizontal Helix, which sounds
scientific to me, but it's not.  

Put simply, it's about using each launch as a
springboard for bigger launches in the future.  

What's cool about this case study, is that John
was able to automate the process using email
autoresponders so you don't have to do a massive
launch (and invest all that time and energy) each
time.

I've only touched on a few of the ideas from the
video, so as you can tell this is one value packed
resource. It's worth watching regardless of
whether you intend to join Jeff's program or not.
