Keep Weight Off

Why is it so hard to keep the weight off? Part 4

In the first 3 articles I reviewed the idea that diets do work in most cases but the statistically failure, regarding diets, is connected to keeping the weight off long term. The primary reason people have a hard time keeping the weight off long term is because the great majority of weight loss programs don't address the subject of self sabotage. Understanding self sabotage is THE most important tool to keeping the weight off and continuing the health improvement journey. Click here, here and here to read the first articles…although you don't really need to in order to understand what is written below.

Think of self sabotage as our subconscious default programming, that was written into us as children regarding how we perceive ourselves. To start looking at self sabotage correctly we must get into the proper mind set. The proper mind sets involves the phrase, "nothing really is as it appears". Think about when a married couple has a verbal conflict. They're rarely fighting over what they're fighting over. The fight usually represents much deeper issues and past emotional wounds. Self sabotage works exactly like that.

You need to look deep inside yourself to find the real reasons behind the cycle of diet attempt and failure. Due to the deep inner searching required to identify the self saboteur and its' primary motivation to keep you unhealthy (not to mention the energy required to bring the self saboteur onto your team), this is not for everyone.

The first realization a person must make on this journey inward (if you have been or are in a chronic cycle of weight loss and weight gain) is that there's a subconscious part of yourself that calculates an extreme benefit to you gaining the weight back and staying sick. Although this is a little hard to believe, there are concrete reasons why people constantly want to get healthy yet fail on most (if not every) attempt. Understanding those reasons involves seeking out the self saboteur.

Here's how this often looks like in real life. Lets break down the weight loss/weight gain cycle into 4 stages. 1) We have the joining of a diet program. 2) The person is often successful during the diet yet some start consuming unhealthy foods again during the diet or after the diet is over. 3) We have the original weight coming back and maybe a little more. 4) We have the declaration of another diet failure. The question is,"where did the self saboteur step into picture?" You may say at stage 2 but oddly enough the self saboteur is often driving the entire cycle, even the joining of the diet program!

The self saboteur is really interested in what I call, "the cream" or the invisible stage 5. The self saboteur feasts on the cream that rises to the top of the sabotage structure and that would be the negative emotions that comes after a diet failure or any failure.

What does diet failure (or any failure) really feel like, on an emotional level? Failure often brings about a flurry of negative emotional attack on the dieter themselves, from themselves. This often produces feelings of complete inadequacy and hopelessness on all levels. This end stage (the hidden stage 5) is what the self saboteur really feasts on and inside this weak emotional bubble, the self saboteur feels most safe. Oddly enough the self saboteur often feels most safe in this zone because most of their childhood was lived under the same conditions. This barren emotional landscape often feels most like home to a certain part of our personality, which thinks not only that this place is comfortable/cozy but moving away from this place is something we don't even deserve.

That cycle of emotional attack, guilt and punishment would not be limited to health endeavours, as the self saboteur would set up camp in many other parts of a person's life to eventually produce the sweet cream of failure all over the map. In the next article I will review why the self saboteur often fights tooth and nail to keep us sick, dysfunctional and overweight. Come see me talk on this very subject Nov 20th.
